There are 50 dimes in a roll. Silver dimes each weigh about 2.5 grams. Therefore a roll would weigh a smidgen more (for the wrapper) than 125gr. 125 grams is about 0.276 pounds or a little more than a quarter pound (4 oz). (BTW a non-silver dime is just about the same weight so a quarter pound works regardless of what dime type)

As an aside, a silver dime (1964 or earlier) is worth about 60 cents due to the value of silver (intrinsic) but may be ALOT more due to collectors value (expecially in nice condition).

I wish I still got them i my change....

Actually the Kennedy half dollar was clad in silver (40%) from 1965 until 1970, and you can still find silver coins in change though they are few and far between. I got some rolls of half dollars about five years ago, and I remember getting four silver clad Kennedy's, one from 1964, and one 1939 Walking Liberty half dollar all in one roll. I have heard several stories of people (mostly cashiers) still finding silver coins in change.

Silver coins did disappear from circulation almost right away as people hoarded them. For a year or two you might spot one about as often as you see a wheatie penny now, but they were instantly very scarce.

One of the most popular coins throughout American history had been the half dollar. Few people liked the dollar - it was heavy and represented a day's pay until inflation set in. Bags of one thousand uncirculated Morgan dollars sat in banks, some until the GSA sold the choice ones in the 1970s. (GSA provenance still commands a nice market premium). Bags of one thousand silver dollars were the principal means of transferring wealth between banks before the modern era. Savvy coin dealers were buying these bags at face in the early 1960s. So for a popular circulating coin, people liked the half. When Kennedy was assassinated in November 1963 the mint hurriedly replaced Franklin (who had been on the half only fifteen years) with Kennedy. Everyone knew the clad coins were coming, and this was the last year of 90% silver coins, and the first year of the Kennedys (1964), so everybody saved the new Kennedys, as well as hoarding the Franklins and any Walkers they might see. The half literally disappeared from circulation in 1964 and has never come back. Cash registers used to have a change space for halves, but no more. I remember seeing a few silver coins in 1965, which we kept.

Hey there...an intriguing thought. Tho' this may be a bit off your intitial intent, I still think it applies. My dad was a coin collector for many years, and this was how I kept him in mind while away:

It's Just a Dime?!?

The older I get...the farther away...
This same old "too-far-away" seems,
And I look, ever, forward to that wonderful day
I'll be home...to that home of my dreams!

This home's not a building, but it is a place,
With my folks "stop-for-coffee" near,
And I'm never too far from a warm friendly face,
Or the hug of someone I hold dear!

In the meantime I have my rituals, which range,
From the mundane to the truly sublime,
One of them involves sifting through change,
For that elusive wheat penny or pure silver dime!

And I found one just the other day,
Which brought me to writing this time.
I just had to explain to the person who'd say,
"What's the excitement, it's only a dime?!?"

Just a dime, it may seem, to the average guy,
But it's the way I remember my dad every day!
See, he's too far away, but, in heart, kept nearby,
I "collect" for him all the while I'm kept away!

Then a '44 Mercury...change from a transaction,
Clean...in fine shape...truly a great find!
Assured, when my dad sees it, of his satisfaction...
It's some time since my search involved luck of this kind!

If you are wanting it to be sold later for a good chunk of change, I would say probably not. If you plan to purchase this either for a
gift or just to have and hand it down to children for an inheritance,
I think it may be. It will be uncirculated and as long as you leave
it in the original packaging, the value remains higher. Unlike
another answer, I think they will increase in value as only a
certain amount of quarters was printed and they will not ever
be printed again. Coins are not the way to "get rich" if this is
your intent, but can be a fun collectible item and it depends on
how much you have to pay for the proof set.

Good idea...but, it would never work....

Who defines what is necessary or unnecessary?

Are road repairs necessary? On every road? Is medicare necessary? For every patient, especially those terminally ill?

Is welfare necessary? For those that were displaced by tornadoes or hurricanes?

I agree that our government spends way too much....and, as an individual, I balance my budget each month....I make decisions about what to buy and what not to buy.....the government should do a better job of it too....

But, there are so many people involved, with so many different interests....to get us to agree on what is necessary and what is not necessary would be nearly impossible.....

What a great idea. Then you can take your share of all that money, travel abroad, and when you have a serious problem, call your mother because the US embassy no longer provides consular services.
