Question by xx3: Is It Illegal To Melt Old US Silver Coins?
I have a lot of old morgan dollars, peace dollars, dimes, quarters etc. I would like to have a few silver rings made from the silver content. Is it illegal to melt old US coins?
these are junk coins that I bought in a lot for really cheap. I am a coin collector and have exaples in mint state condition.

  1. Q Continuum says:

I don’t know about illegal, but I seriously doubt that anyone will show up at your door about it. On the other hand, they are worth a lot more in their current form than they will be as rings…

  2. milton b says:

yes it is illegal to deface any US currency

  3. Morgan R says:

yes, you cannot deface legal tender. those coins were supposed to be turned in back in the days when we went off the gold standard. why would you melt down historical icons to make jewelry? silver can be bought for much less than those coins are worth

  4. Barry C says:

no – research the history of Morgan dollars and you will see almost all of them were melted down.
