The 1943 steel penny, which can look silver if polished, is not rare. However if you find one made of copper, you are on to something. Keep your mouth shut and go to the nearest coin dealer to have it authenticated.

The 1943 wheat cent was made of steel and zinc. The 1943 copper cent is worth a fortune. During WWII NICKELS were made of 40 per cent silver. Of course, dimes, quarters, and halves were made of 90 per cent sterling silver until 1965

Ditto with John H’s reply. If you have one, you are very lucky and wealthy to boot!

  4. Agent 86 says:

No, they are not worth much. Copper was in shortage in 1943. The 1943 penny was made from zinc-coated steel. There were none made with copper.
    - 1943 made in Philadelphia, no letter under date, wheat penny in excellent condition is worth; $1.50
1943 made in Denver, has a small ” D ” beneath date, in excellent condition is worth; $2.00
1943 made in San Fransisco, has a small ” S” beneath date, is worth; $3.00.
However, some of the 1943D coins have a ” double mint mark ” those ones are rare and are worth $30.00 in excellent condition. Excellent condition means they show only slight wear.
If the penny shows alot of wear, it is only worth about 25 cents.
