A silver coin is 0.01 cm thick and has radius of 1.50 cm at 20 Celsius. Calculate the change in its
a. Thickness
b. Area
c. Volume
d. Density

When its temperature is increase to 70 degree Celsius. Density of silver at 20 degree Celsius is 10.5 per g cc. ( Coefficient of Linear Thermal expansion of silver is 19 x 10^6/Celsius)

linear thermal expansion coef silver is 18e-6 per C
∆L/L = α∆T
∆A/A = 2α∆T
∆V/V = 3α∆T

thickness:
.01 cm = 0.1 mm = 100 µm
NO coin is that thin, you must have copied it wrong. I'll do the calc, you will have to modify it.
∆L = αL∆T = 18e-6 x 50 x 100 = 0.09 µm or 90 nm

Area or volume, calculate the area or volume, and apply one of the above equations

Change in density is the same as change in volume, as the mass is constant.

Question by bmglowgranted: Why is it rare to get silver dime or silver quarter back in change?
Before 1965, dimes and quarters were made of real silver. Why is it rare to get one of these back in change?
