Question by annw: Are some mercury dimes worth more than others?
I have a BIG bag of mercury dimes that I want to sell. Should I just roll them or should I sort them first?

Best answer:

Answer by LuvtheElves
Yes. Older ones are worth more (they started making them in 1916.) Also, many of them have defects from minting such as missing details, particularly on the fasces on the reverse, or one date stamped over another. Before you sell them off, take them to a dealer and have them appraised. Some can be worth a lot of money.

Question by smcgomery: where's the best place to buy rolls of Roosevelt 90% silver dimes?

Best answer:

Answer by Jerry
Go to a coin dealer. Apmex is one firm you might check for online quotes. However, it might be cheaper to buy locally due to weight and shipping costs.

The larger the quantity you buy, the smaller the spread should be. Bags are cheaper than rolls. Junk silver coins are often quoted as a multiple of face value. Should be around 13x at current silver prices.

Can anyone tell me in detail whats the difference in buying

vs
2. A 00 Bag of 90% Silver of .50 Cent Halves Only
vs

No real difference. This is considered junk silver coins and the value is based on the silver content. Cost should be based on weight, not face value.

Question by dart6500: If the US dollar crashes is it smart to have junk pre 1964 silver dimes (90% sliver) worth each currently?
My basic concern is that if the dollar crashes and we go to a trading system temporarily, how would the lay person know the value of silver if technology shuts down do to the crash? Would it be a smart investment?
thanks for your help

First off this did not even happen in the great depression or any of the great panics in the 1800's.

You are right that no one would know how much any of this stuff is worth. If we had a nuclear war or something and had to go back to a barter economy it would be the people that own food or generators or fuel or medicine that would be rich. I doubt silver or gold would be very useful.

Question by Adel: When did people start hoarding all the pre-1965 dimes and quarters?
Did that happen once the change came into effect in 1965? Or was it gradually happening till the early 90s?

Also, what's the chances of finding a silver coin in a roll of coins from a bank? I know the chances must be slim... but is it a better probability to get a silver dime? I found a 1941 Mercury dime in a roll two weeks ago - is that a silver coin, and if so how much is it worth(it's a bit discolored and worn out though, but the date and details are good).
Edit: Hey you mean you worked back in the late 60s?

A 41 dime is silver and worth about 80 cents. People started saving them up in 65, as soon as the new ones came out they started keeping the old ones. Now the big craze is for the new state quarters. Theres no money to be made on any of them, its just that everyone wants to keep them because everybody else is doing it, Crazy ain't it.

Question by Ashkan A: Roosevelt dimes?
I went to the bank and got a few rolls or dimes. All of the websites I've been to say that I should look for the 82 no "P" and 1969. Are there any other one as far as errors? Or maybe anything else. And I know that the ones before 1964 are silver.

Best answer:

Answer by Taiping
With the dime being the smallest coin in size it is possible that the planchets can go through all the coin collars. One can have a cent on a dime planchet as well as the other denominations. You can look for them. It looks like from 1965 on there are no doubled dies listed at least in the Red Book. You may have to see if some one has a copy of the Cherry Pickers Guide or get in touch with one of the error collecting organizations. A google search should get you to the Combined Organization of Error Collectors. I do not collect errors so I hope this points you in the right direction. You can also email answerman2@aol.com, he answers coin questions for Numismatic News the weekly coin paper. He may also know about other groups and books.
