Well, what are you looking to pay, face value or the going rate?

For face value, you can try going through your change or sorting through bank rolls. This isn't going to yield much. With high prices back in the news again like 1980-91, the average person is paying a lot more attention to their change. Sorting of bank rolls has picked up.

Unless you own the laundromat. good luck finding an ignorant owner who doesn't know about silver coins.

As for collectors, they expect to get near 'melt'. Websites charge a premium above 'melt'.

So, what are you willing to pay? I'd be happy to unload my stash of 'junk' silver for an ounce.

I know when you go and dump change into the coin star machines they can detect coins that are junk silver. Are there any coin sorting machines where I can insert rolls of quarters or dimes to sort which ones are junk silver ?

Probably not. Just any coins before 1965 except nickels and pennies are junk silver (in the U.S)

Junk silver coins are just well worn specimens. They came from the mint like all other US coins but they have been well used by people and have little or no collector value. The mint made millions of these coins each year up to 1964. Then when they quit making 90% silver coinage in 1965 people started hoarding the older pieces. As time goes by people started gathering a small bunch here and a small bunch there ... now you have bags you can sell.

My basic concern is that if the dollar crashes and we go to a trading system temporarily, how would the lay person know the value of silver if technology shuts down do to the crash? Would it be a smart investment?

First off this did not even happen in the great depression or any of the great panics in the 1800's.

You are right that no one would know how much any of this stuff is worth. If we had a nuclear war or something and had to go back to a barter economy it would be the people that own food or generators or fuel or medicine that would be rich. I doubt silver or gold would be very useful.

How do I tell the difference and know what I should throw out? Replating is not worth it. Gold is good, silver is ok. Some good old junk jewelry may have collector value.

Just saw some eBay listings for scrap silver, looks like a lot of jewelry on some of these listings, and I was wondering if any of you had had any experience buying scrap silver online on eBay or elsewhere in jewelry form. Coins are a bit easier to identify as the real thing, but I'm curious if any of you have had any experience with any of this. I'd be tempted to buy for the value of the silver:

The USA stopped putting silver in coins in 1964. There was some silver in half dollars a few years after that. I think up to 1970. Coins 1964 and older are worth 10 to 11 times the face value ( a dime would be worth . to .10). The half dollars 1965to 1970 are worth about . or so each.

If you want to get the easiest silver possible, buy the etf, so you can buy at spot with no shipping costs. both bullion and junk silver can be help personally at your house, so if you like the security of that or believe in a doomsday scenario I would buy physical silver. bullion is the most expensive way to buy, but it is in easy increments and it is simple to know what you are getting. If you want to spend the time buy the 90% silver and research, sometimes it sells for above and sometimes below spot, some 90% also has numismatic value are value for just the coin in no relation to the silver value.

I have alot of scrap silver that I want to melt into casting grain..I have a furnace that I have melted silver in before but I cant seem to get the nice small grains for ease of melting later..I also have some .999 fine that I want to turn into sterling casting grain..Any help would be great

generally I don't think it's worth the bother. The problem is that your sterling silver is an alloy, and whenever you melt it, some of the metal with a lower melting point vaporizes. Repeated melting and casting doesn't really improve the metal.
I never bothered to convert scrap metal in an extra step into casting grain. But out of curiosity I looked it up and it's apparently done by pouring molten metal into a large bucket of water. Sounds not entirely safe, but I guess if the quantity of the metal used at one time isn't too great it shouldn't be too bad if you keep your head out of the hot steam and wear a faceshield.

Not sure about turning fine silver into sterling silver, because I think there are quite a number of different alloys of sterling silver which have different additives beside copper. If you really want to try that I would search through some books for professional jewelers. I think it will require some reading for if you want to use it for anything you want to sell you have to make sure you still have the required silver content.
